Basic characteristics of oregano


Oregano is also known as wild marjoram, and originated soil of oregano is northern Europe. Today, oregano grows in all regions of the world.

This spicy herb is known for its special smell and taste, and is mainly used in combination with tomato, pasta, on pizza and the like.


Nutritional Value of Oregano


The presence of vitamin K and iron makes oregano special  among other spices. 

It also contains dietary fiber, carbohydrates, amino acids, fatty acids. 

Among minerals, oregano contains a sufficient concentration of calcium and manganese.

Oregano oil contains thymol and carvachol, two antioxidants in order to protect the body from cell damage.

Also thymol and carvachol have antibacterial and antiparasitic action.

Oregano is a very good source of fiber that affects the removal of toxins from the body, and it can reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Health Benefits of Oregano


Oregano has a positive effect on many organs - liver, spleen, kidneys, lungs and bladder.

Particularly the oregano is applied to digestive problems and breathing problems. It is especially good at removing rheumatism and nerve problems.

The external application of oregano is used with the onset of dermatitis and inflammation in the mucous membranes.

Against bronchitis and catarrh of the respiratory organs, also for relieving cramps in digestive organs , it can be made and used oregano wine

Oregano wine is prepared from 3 g of dried herb per 100 ml of wine; leave to stay for five days, strain it and use one cup a day, before meals.

Rheumatism can be cure by used a mixture of 5 g of oregano oil and 95 g of rosemary tincture, which is rubbed on the exterior of the affected joints.

Some authors warn that oregano should not be used by people with high blood pressure and high temperature.

Application of oregano in cooking

In culinary, fresh and dry oregano are in use, but fresh oregano has intense flavor among dry oregano. Fresh oregano leaves have a strong green color, while the stems are stiff, with no dark or yellow stains.

The manner of keeping oregano


Dried oregano is stored in sealed glass jars in a dark, cool place and can be stored for up to 6 months and used for different dishes.

Fresh oregano can be stored in the refrigerator if it is tightly wrapped in a plastic bag or place in an airtight container.

Interesting fact: The bees love oregano, and ants don't.
